Patty Griffin

July 3, 2013 - Patty Griffin joins host David Dye on the stage of World Cafe Live. Patty Griffin released her debut in 1996 and since that time she has become a favorite of both music fans and musicians. Her songs have been covered by Emmylou Harris, the Dixie Chicks, and Joan Baez among many others.
Her latest album American Kid was written after learning of her father’s impending death. Although you might assume that would make for a fairly dark record, many songs are actually a celebration of his life and her family’s history. The album also sees Patty being joined by singer Robert Plant on three songs. Through working with the Led Zeppelin frontman on the disc and touring with his Band of Joy, the pair’s musical partnership turned into a romantic one. She talks about recording the single “Ohio” with him. Plus, Petula Clark. The 80 year old singer tells great stories, from her childhood stardom at home in the UK, to her first hit in the US (1964’s “Downtown”), to the many fascinating people she met along the way including John Lennon and Elvis among others.
