PHILADELPHIA, PA – WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and non-commercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, names Cory Chisel as its October Artist To Watch.

Cory Chisel’s music seems as organic as life itself, grown out of the American Heartland where he was raised. The son of a Baptist minister in Wisconsin, Chisel first discovered the power of music and storytelling in church, where he was inspired by the passion of the gospel and hymns. Growing up with nine guitarists in the family and a blues musician for an uncle didn’t hurt either, and it’s no surprise that Chisel felt the force of music within him early in life. After an adolescence largely sheltered from pop music, the singer/songwriter emerged from Wisconsin with a sound defined by the influences of his youth: passionate and dramatic, lush and grand, and full of powerful stories – just like the land that raised him. Death Won’t Send A Letter, his debut LP with band The Wandering Sons, was produced by Grammy-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, The White Stripes) and perfectly captures Chisel’s rich and nuanced vocals, emotional vulnerability, and unmistakable honesty. And rightfully so; it seems nothing else could do justice to the debut of such a powerful voice.

“There’s a real honesty that runs throughout Corey Chisel’s songwriting.” said Dan Reed, WXPN Music Director. “An honesty that eludes most singer/songwriters...no matter how hard they try.”

Bruce Warren, Assistant General Manager of Programming for WXPN adds, “The songs’ themes are ageless, and they are as fervent as the music Cory grew up on as the son of a Baptist minister.”
