PHILADELPHIA, PA – February 1, 2016 – WXPN, the nationally-recognized leader in Triple A music and non-commercial radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, named OJR as its February Artist To Watch. WXPN Music Director and Host Dan Reed presented the first of the month’s on-air segments today, February 1, in the 4 p.m. hour.

Originally from Virginia, OJR, or Oliver John-Rodgers, first drew influence from a bluegrass and country-infused childhood paired with an exposure to grunge rock artists like Nirvana. This distinctive combination reveals itself in his musical style. OJR’s vintage sound crosses genres from indie to psychedelic rock, with country and folk influence heard throughout – a sound uniquely dubbed “acid cowboy.” The independent artist moved to Nashville in 2014 after releasing his first two LPs, High School and Human Style. He spent the next year using Garageband and various bedrooms around the world to record and self-produce his third full-length album. Released in 2015, Nashville Demos showcases OJR as both a prolific songwriter and genre-straddling rocker. He is known for his swagger on stage and confidence in his one-of-a-kind sound. OJR is currently on tour supporting former XPN Free at Noon guest, Rayland Baxter.

“It’s fresh and refreshing,” said Bruce Warren, Assistant General Manager of Programming, speaking of Nashville Demos. “There’s a dual musical nature on this record that presents OJR as both the singer-songwriter and the rock and roller that is very impressive.”
