PHILADELPHIA (MARCH 5, 2014): Philadelphia public radio station WXPN will bring the sounds of the nation’s biggest music gathering to listeners locally and nationwide with expanded presentations of live music broadcasts and special programming during the 2014 South By Southwest (SXSW) Music Conference taking place in Austin, Texas from March 11-16.

From Monday, March 10 through Friday, March 14, WXPN’s syndicated World Cafe music and interview program will present Sense of Place: Austin. The Sense of Place series gives listeners an idea of the past and present of a specific area’s local music scene and offers some pointers for musicians, music-lovers and visitors. Highlights of Sense of Place: Austin will be:

Monday, March 10:
World Cafe Next artist Orthy in a full band session; an interview and live performance from Austin-based musician Alejandro Escovedo, along with his comments about Austin; interview with Jim Eno of the Austin-based band Spoon.

Tuesday, March 11:
Interview and performance by Austin singer-songwriter Shakey Graves; NPR Music’s Bob Boilen’s picks for this year’s SXSW; interview with SXSW Producer/Founder Roland Swenson.

Wednesday, March 12:
Interview and performance by Austin band Wild Child; five new bands to watch as recommended by Austin radio station’s KUTX’s Matt Reilly (with five songs available for download).

Thursday, March 13:
Live performances and interviews with Austin artists Patty Griffin and The Black Angels; interview with KUTX’s Jody Denberg on Austin’s music history; and a Latin Roots special full band session with Austin’s Grupo Fantasma.

Friday, March 14:
Interviews and live performances with four bands recorded live in Austin on the previous day (Thursday, March 13): Kins, Phox, Wye Oak and Bright Light Social Hour.

Additionally, on Thursday, March 13, World Cafe will be part of this year’s KUTX Live at the Four Seasons annual morning radio show artist showcase and broadcast, featuring the four bands that will be heard on Sense of Place: Austin the following day. According to World Cafe host David Dye, "SXSW is ground zero for music discovery and Austin has such a rich history of music that we’re using the week to reflect a portion of it, and to introduce our audiences to some new sounds."

And on Friday, March 14, WXPN will again be one of five public radio stations that are banding together to present the SXSW Radio Day Stage public radio concert broadcast and webcast from the Austin Convention Center starting at 11 AM CT/12 PM ET. The following artists’ performances will be broadcast and streamed on WXPN, KUTX-FM/Austin, KXT-FM/Dallas, WFUV-FM/New York and The Current/Minneapolis. This schedule of artists will be heard on WXPN in Philadelphia at these times:

  • 1 PM ET: Lucius
  • 2 PM ET: The Hold Steady
  • 3 PM ET: Phantogram
  • 4 PM ET: Jeremy Messersmith
  • 5 PM ET: Temples
  • 5:30PM ET: Damon Albarn
[Note: The SWSW Radio Day Stage concerts broadcast on Friday, March 14 will mean that the WXPN broadcast of World Cafe will be heard from 7 PM to 9PM ET for that day only.]

The Sense of Place series is made possible by the Wyncote Foundation. World Cafe, which airs from 2 pm to 4 pm ET Monday through Friday on its home station, WXPN 88.5 FM Philadelphia, is nationally syndicated to more than 225 radio stations by NPR.
